Urban Terror background

Urban Terror started around 2000 as a total-conversion mod for id Software's Quake III Arena, made by the team that later became FrozenSand. It mixed fast, movement-heavy shooting with real-world weapons and more tactical rules. It was later released as a free standalone game, so players no longer need a copy of Quake III, and it is still available from urbanterror.info.

ut.pieter.com comes from the same browser preservation effort as rtcw.pieter.com. It compiles the ioUrbanTerror engine to WebAssembly and lists maps such as Casa, Turnpike, Abbey and Uptown. Game data downloads on the first visit and is cached afterwards. The site credits FrozenSand as the creator and owner, says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by FrozenSand or id Software, and asks players to support the original by downloading it from urbanterror.info.

How to play Urban Terror

Matches are mostly team modes, such as Team Survivor, where eliminated players wait for the next round, Capture the Flag and Bomb. Movement matters a lot: you can wall-jump, climb ledges and slide, and sprinting uses stamina. Damage depends on where you are hit, and wounds make you bleed until you stop to bandage. Weapons are based on real firearms, and each player picks a loadout before spawning. Matches run on fairly compact urban maps.

  1. Open the page on a desktop computer, preferably in Chrome.
  2. Type a player name, which the site remembers, and press Play.
  3. Wait for the first data download to finish; later visits load from the cache.
  4. Choose a team and loadout once you join, then play with keyboard and mouse.
