Play Diablo in Your Browser

Diablo is Blizzard North's 1996 action role-playing game set in the cathedral and catacombs beneath the town of Tristram. This link opens Diablo Web, an open-source browser client that runs the free shareware demo, or the full game if you load your own DIABDAT.MPQ file.

Diablo background

Diablo was developed by Blizzard North and released by Blizzard Entertainment for Windows at the end of 1996. Its real-time, click-to-attack combat and randomly generated dungeons set the template for many later action RPGs. Today the game is sold by GOG, and also through Battle.net.

Diablo Web is maintained on GitHub by Nikita Maksimov (JohnImril). It is a React and TypeScript client built with Vite around an existing WebAssembly build of the game engine. The project credits the devilution community's reconstruction of the original engine and d07RiV's earlier DiabloWeb client, which did the first WebAssembly port. The free demo uses Blizzard's shareware spawn.mpq, which the page downloads itself. Retail data is not included, so the full game needs DIABDAT.MPQ from a legal copy.

How to play Diablo

You choose a Warrior, Rogue or Sorcerer and go down through sixteen dungeon levels below Tristram's cathedral, ending in a fight with Diablo. You click to move and attack, pick up randomly generated weapons and armor, learn spells from books, and return to town to sell loot, repair gear and talk to the townsfolk. The shareware demo only covers the first few levels. Saves are stored in the browser, and the project describes online multiplayer as experimental.

  1. Open the page in a desktop browser; the project recommends a mouse and keyboard, though touch controls exist.
  2. Choose Play Free Demo to start the shareware version, or Load Your MPQ (or drop the file on the start screen) to use your own DIABDAT.MPQ.
  3. Create a character and click to move, attack and pick up items.
  4. Use Manage Saves on the start screen to export your .sv files before clearing browser data or switching devices.
