Hearts: Cardgames.io background

Hearts is a classic trick-avoidance card game that many people first met as the version bundled with Microsoft Windows. The Cardgames.io about section says its online version was made to make Hearts quick and simple to play in a browser, and that it was the fourth game made for the site, after Idiot and Crazy Eights. It was built with HTML, JavaScript and CSS, using card images by Nicu Buculei from OpenClipArt.

The rules follow a common basic version. The author notes a change made on 21 February 2014: after conflicting player requests, the Queen of Spades no longer breaks hearts. Cardgames.io is owned and operated by Rauðás Games ehf.

How to play Hearts: Cardgames.io

The aim is to collect as few penalty points as possible. Each heart is worth one point and the Queen of Spades is worth 13. Before each hand you pass three cards: to the left, then right, then across, with no passing on the fourth hand. The player holding the two of clubs leads it, others must follow suit if they can, and hearts cannot be led until one has been played on another suit. If one player takes all 13 hearts and the Queen of Spades, they "shoot the moon" and the other three get 26 points each. The game ends when someone reaches 100 points.

  1. Open the page and click Deal to start a game against three computer players.
  2. Select three cards to pass, usually your highest or most dangerous ones.
  3. Click a card to play it to each trick, following the led suit when you can.
  4. Use Rules for the full rule set, Options for settings, or Multiplayer to play with people.
