In his release post, qwook described it as his first official indie game release, made by working on it every day for three months before bringing in musicians in the fourth month. The original soundtrack is by Entropic Sonics, and the game was built for the web with Three.js, using Blender and Photoshop for its assets.

The developers say it is based on early Flash escape games, and it has been translated into many languages by the community. The itch.io page warns that it is not suitable for children or easily disturbed players. Later devlogs announced that the game would be shown at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum and that work on a sequel had begun.

How to play last seen online

The whole game takes place on a simulated desktop computer. You open folders, read files and messages, and look for passwords and clues hidden across the system to unlock the next part of the machine. Puzzles build on information found elsewhere on the computer, and as you dig deeper the files reveal an increasingly unsettling story about the person who used it. A full playthrough takes about an hour.
