Six Cats Under was made by Team Bean Loop as a game jam project and published on itch.io on May 16, 2020. The team credits include Miles Äijälä, who posts as qwertyprophecy, artist Robin Swift and Tomas Beržinskas. It was built in Unity with pixel art made in Photoshop and released for Windows, macOS, Linux and HTML5.

The title plays on the phrase six feet under. The game drew a large number of player ratings on itch.io, where comments often mention its art and its bittersweet ending, and the review site Buried Treasure described it as a small vignette. It takes well under an hour to finish.

How to play Six Cats Under

You play an elderly woman who has just been killed by a falling bookshelf and has become a ghost. Her cats are still in the apartment, and you use poltergeist powers to interact with objects around the rooms and steer each cat toward a way out. Every cat needs a different set of actions, so the game becomes a series of small environmental puzzles in a single location, with story told through the setting and the cats' reactions.

1. Open the itch.io page and launch the HTML5 version in your browser, or download it for your computer.
2. Move the cursor around the apartment to find objects your ghost can interact with.
3. Click objects to use your poltergeist powers and see how each cat reacts.
4. Work out the right sequence for every cat until all six have left the apartment.
