2048 background
Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli wrote 2048 over a weekend in March 2014. He credited earlier games 1024 and Threes! as inspiration, and released his version for free with its source code on GitHub.
The game spread quickly online, and its open source code led to countless clones and variants. The site linked here is the official home of the original game.
How to play 2048
2048 is played on a 4×4 grid. Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in one direction, and two tiles with the same number merge into one tile with their sum. After every move, a new 2 or 4 appears in an empty square. You win by creating a 2048 tile, and the game ends when the board is full and no move can merge any tiles.
- Use the arrow keys, or swipe on a touchscreen, to slide all tiles.
- Merge matching numbers to build larger tiles.
- Keep your largest tile in one corner and build the rest of the board around it.
- Avoid moves that pull the largest tile out of its corner.
