OpenFront.io background

OpenFront is a fork and rewrite of WarFront.io, an earlier open-source game that had no multiplayer, and it draws heavily on the territory-grabbing formula of Territorial.io. Its maintainer, known on GitHub as evanpelle, added online multiplayer and, with outside contributors, many new systems. The creator has said he set up a company, OpenFront LLC, to run the game.

The project's public GitHub repository dates from December 2024. The code is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and the assets under CC BY-SA 4.0, and derivative games must show attribution such as Based on OpenFront. At least one commercial fork, FrontWars, has been built from it.

How to play OpenFront.io

Each player picks a starting spot on a map and claims the empty land around it, then pushes into neighbours using an attack slider that sets what share of troops to send. Plains, highlands and mountains are progressively harder to take. As territory grows you build cities, ports, factories, defence posts, missile silos and SAM launchers. Transport ships carry troops across water, warships attack other fleets, and nuclear weapons turn land into fallout. You can ally with other players or with AI-controlled nations, though betraying an ally carries penalties. A match is won by holding most of the usable land.

  1. Open openfront.io and join a public lobby or create a private game, or play solo against AI nations.
  2. Click a spot on the map to place your starting territory.
  3. Left-click neighbouring land to expand or attack, and adjust the attack slider to control how many troops you commit.
  4. Right-click your territory to open the build menu, and right-click other players to propose alliances.
