OpenTTD background

Transport Tycoon Deluxe was designed by Chris Sawyer and published by MicroProse in 1995. OpenTTD began in 2004 as a reimplementation of that game's engine and has since grown into an independent project with larger maps, online multiplayer, and many new features.

The project is developed by volunteers and released under the GPL. It ships with free replacement graphics, sounds, and music, so it no longer needs files from the original game.

How to play OpenTTD

In OpenTTD you run a transport company from a starting year you choose. You build railways, bus and truck routes, airports, and docks to carry passengers and cargo such as coal, oil, and goods between towns and industries. Income depends on how far and how fast each load travels, so good route planning matters. Over the years new vehicles become available, towns grow, and other companies may compete with you.

  1. Start a new game and choose the map size, climate, and starting year.
  2. Find an industry that produces cargo and another that accepts it.
  3. Build stations at both ends and connect them with track or road.
  4. Buy vehicles from a depot, give them orders between the stations, and reinvest your profits.
